Back to Back Sundays with 50 Mile Rides

Each year we do this, in whatever current incarnation suits us, it starts to get more real when we start logging longer days on the bike. The last two Sundays, we’ve ridden 50+ miles each. Getting out butts accustomed to “seat” time is tough during the Winter. But the Spring finally looks to be happening in Central Ohio, so away we go!

Training. Brainstorming fundraising ideas. Making notes about logistical stuff for the long day. We’ve got time but it all needs to happen.

Ride 1: Rockford to Paris - June 12th, 2021

  We know where we're going! No, we will not be crossing the Atlantic Ocean but we will be visiting our old "friend", The White Pine Trail on JUNE 12th  to ride from Rockford to Paris, MI and back. On the northern most point of the ride we will stop to visit a 20 foot tall replica of The Eiffel Tower in  Paris Park . I can't wait to have my picture taken next to this monument to making use of idle hands.  The total route is 105 miles (click that to see a map) from the staging area in Belmont(That's not technically Rockford, I know but I have reasons. Number one being the staging area has actual bathrooms.) to Paris and back. For those unfamiliar with the trail, the section between Sand Lake and Big Rapids is unpaved/gravel. It's not the roughest track I've ridden but it's certainly not smooth tarmac. Other than that and the distance the route is pretty nice. Ride 5: Bringing It Home

As much as these rides were intended to raise money and awareness for SUDEP research and epilepsy, it was a chance to remember Anne in a positive way and have a bit of a celebration for her. A three years later wake, if you will.  The final ride itself was just a 26 mile ride up Michigan’s White Pine Trail from my hometown of Rockford to Sand Lake, where I lived until I was 3. We were joined by our friends Jennifer, Jeff, and Michael. That in and of itself made the ride noteworthy. Having people along made Lisa and I want to sit up and talk rather than putting our heads down and finish as quickly as possible. Thanks to them for taking time out of their evenings to get a bit of exercise with us.  I really need longer arms or another person to take this picture.   By the time we got back to Rockford and   The Rockford Brewing Company  the party had already started. “Well I’m Leaving Tomorrow At Daybreak...”

“Yes I’m leaving the sorrow and heartaches/Before it takes me away from my mind...” If you live anywhere from Iowa to Eastern PA, you know it is supposed to be smoking hot this weekend, so we left the house at 6am for a 50 mile ride before the heat became unbearable. This was supposed to be our 125 mile tune up ride but not in this heat. This was about 12 miles from the house. The Sun was nearly up and the moon was still hanging out. We took a quick break at mile 25. Every stop equaled the sweat just pouring off us. Best to keep moving. Here’s a peacock hanging out in someone’s yard about mile 41. And now we’re home. I’ve consumed breakfast number two of the day: rice, lentils, and eggs. Stay hydrated out there.
